Access to Williamsburg, Virginia
Williamsburg has the advantage of being located on the interstate highway system, as well as having direct access by rail (AmTrak). There is also access by air to three major airports within a 60-mile radius. The closest is just 15 miles east of town at the Newport News - Williamsburg International Airport in Newport News.

The major north-south highway route through eastern and central Virginia is I-95, which bisects I-64 at Richmond. Whether you are by-passing downtown Richmond or going right through town, take I-64 east for a 55-minute trip to Williamsburg. This is the same route you would take if heading to the oceanfront at Virginia Beach, which is an hour further east from Williamsburg.

I-85
from points south (Atlanta, Charlotte) merges with I-95 at Petersburg. Head north and catch I-64 at Richmond, or go three miles south and catch I-295, the eastern loop around Richmond. It will connect you with I-64 just east of the Richmond Airport.

If you wish to take a more leisurely route from Richmond, Route 5 is the "plantation road" that parallels the northern shore of the James River and harbors those great houses from several periods of Virginia's illustrious history.

Another route of access to WIlliamsburg is Route 10 east from Chester at I-95 to Surry County Courthouse and then north on the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry. This route is another "plantation road" that parallels the southern shore of the James River. You'll pass fewer plantations but a bit more Civil War history in Hopewell, and a charming work in progress - the Henricus reconstruction and restoration - a "citie" from 1611 in the Chester area.

Another access from the north is across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (Route 13) to Virginia Beach. Take I-64 or I-664 towards directional signage for Richmond and Williamsburg. Follow radio directions to avoid traffic tie-ups in this busy area. Flashing lights accompany directional signs with radio frequency information and color bars to assist you when problems occur with traffic flow during peak drive times.

(See your specific Williamsburg area hotel or attractions map for more detailed I-64 exiting information.)
