There are two plantation roads bordering
the James, the most well known is Route 5,
which hugs the northern shore of the river. To proceed
out of Williamsburg for "plantations west",
take Route 199 to the Route 5 intersection at John
Tyler Highway and head west. You'll soon come
across the plantations a few miles after you cross
the Chickahominy River. Indian
Fields Tavern is at about the midway point
between Williamsburg and Shirley
Plantation and is a good choice for some
fine dining. Reservations are suggested.
Route 10 is accessed by taking the Jamestown
Ferry at the southern end of Jamestown Road.
The crossing is now Free and is great fun for the
whole family. Watch the gulls and cormorants dive
for their suppers and get a great perspective view
of Jamestown Island. Smith's
Fort is one of the first places you'll
approach on the southern side. East from Surry
Courthouse and youll find Bacon's
Castle and Smithfield.
From the west it is a bit longer stretch down a country
road, but there are some interesting places to visit
including City Point at Hopewell and Henricus.
Carter's Grove
is off Route 60 east, about a mile beyond Busch Gardens.
